First, the dentist will take some x-rays to get a good idea of whether they need to focus during the procedure. They'll also use the x-rays to make sure there aren't any other issues that could affect their ability to perform the root canal.
Preparing the Tooth
Next, your dentist will prepare your tooth. This involves using a local anesthetic to number the area around the tooth and help you to relax. They may also place a rubber dam to keep the area around the tooth dry.
Drilling an Access Hole and Cleaning the Tooth
After this, your dentist will be ready to begin cleaning out the tooth. In order to do this, they will need to drill an access hold in the exterior.
Then, they will use special root canal files to clean out the damaged pulp, debris, and bacteria from inside the tooth. They will continue scraping the inside of the tooth until it's fully hollowed out and the nerve has been removed.
Placing a Temporary Filling
Sometimes, the dentist will go ahead a permanently fill the tooth at this point. Other times, though, they like to wait a week or two before placing the permanent filling.
If your tooth is still infected or you're experiencing a lot of discomfort, they'll likely give you some time before finishing the job. They'll use temporary filling material to seal the tooth and prevent infection.
Permanently Filling the Tooth
When the time comes to finish up the root canal, the dentist will use a special filling material known as gutta-percha to permanently fill the tooth. They'll then place a regular filling over the top of it.
Additional Reconstructive Treatment
Sometimes, additional reconstructive treatments like crowns are needed to further protect the tooth.
If you need any such treatments, your dentist will schedule them for a later date so that you have time to recover fully from the root canal.
How Much Pain Will You Experience After a Root Canal?
During the actual root canal surgery, you won't feel any pain. Remember, the dentist uses a local anesthetic to totally numb you.
After the anesthesia wears off, you will experience some pain. Most people only experience mild-to-moderate pain after a root canal, and this pain tends to subside within just a couple of days. You'll be back to work or school before you know it.
Your dentist will likely also write you a prescription for some painkillers that you can use to take the edge off your discomfort following the procedure.
How to Prepare for a Root Canal
If you're still feeling nervous about your root canal, remember that there are lots of things you can do to prepare and ensure you have a successful procedure, including the following:
● Pick up medications (if possible)so you don't have to stop at the pharmacy on your way home
● Take antibiotics beforehand (if prescribed) to minimize infection risk
● Get a good night's sleep before your procedure
Be sure to also eat a healthy diet leading up to the procedure and avoid foods or drinks that could aggravate the infected tooth.
How to Care for Your Tooth After a Root Canal
After your root canal surgery, you'll need to take special care of your tooth to avoid aggravating it and ensure it heals properly. Specific guidelines to follow include:
● Avoiding eating until the anesthesia wears off
● Take pain medications as directed
● Avoid chewing on the side of your mouth where the treated tooth is located for a few days, especially if you only have a temporary filling
● Avoid placing pressure on the treated tooth with your tongue, finger, or toothbrush
● Brush and floss gently
If you experience discomfort that lasts longer than a week, or if you experience signs of infection (severe pain, swelling, etc.) call your dentist right away.
