Prevention and Professional Cleanings
In order to have a nice smile, you need healthy teeth and gums. This is why getting regular dental checkups is important to preserving your natural smile. In the dental exam, we look for cavities that are just forming, any signs of gum disease and hidden problems that x-rays will reveal to us. Early detection means we can fix these minor issues before they become larger, more expensive problems.
A professional cleaning will remove any buildup of a hard material, called “tartar,” which forms below your gum line and that home-brushing doesn’t remove. It’s a buildup of bacteria on the tartar below your gum line which leads to gum disease, so getting it removed every six months helps prevent gum disease.
Dental Crowns and Bridges For Damaged Or Missing Teeth
Dental crowns are used to repair damaged teeth. The crown is a tooth-shaped cap that fits over the damaged tooth, restoring its appearance and giving you a good, firm chewing surface again. Crowns are matched to the color of your existing teeth, so your smile will continue to look natural.
When you have a tooth extracted, a dental bridge can be used to replace the missing tooth, filling in the gap so your smile remains pleasing. A dental bridge consists of two crowns attached to a replacement tooth between them. The crowns fit over the teeth which are on either side of the missing tooth and the artificial tooth fills the gap. A bridge restores your ability to bite and chew properly, and keeps your smile looking nice.
Root Canal Therapy
A root canal procedure is done to save an infected tooth. Some of the signs that you may need a root canal are:
- pain in your tooth when chewing
- sensitivity to hot and cold in a tooth
- swelling in your cheek or on your face
- swollen lymph nodes which feel tender
The root canal procedure involves removing the infected, inner part of your tooth and replacing it with a bio-compatible material that helps to keep your tooth firm and supports the tooth’s enamel shell. The only way to determine if you have a tooth infection instead of just a cavity that needs to be filled is to see your dentist. A tooth infection can become a serious health issue if not treated.
If you’re experiencing tooth pain, call us for an appointment at (914) 631-5222 so we can diagnose what’s causing it.
Repairing Smiles With Dental Implants
We’re in the business of creating nice smiles. Dental implants allow us to offer a permanent solution to any missing teeth you have which are affecting your smile. Dental implants replace your missing teeth with firmly attached, new teeth which you never take out. The actual implant is a titanium post which attaches directly to your jaw bone.
As the bone heals, it fuses around the implant which acts like a tooth root for your replacement tooth. The replacement tooth is attached to the post and the gap left by your missing tooth is now filled with a permanent, new tooth. Implants can even replace a full set of dentures, restoring your ability to eat your favorite foods.
Emergency Dentistry
For emergencies like a broken or knocked-out tooth, call us immediately at (914) 631-5222. We will get you in right away to see the dentist. Save the tooth, if possible, and bring it with you. Handle a knocked-out tooth only by the top and keep it moist in water or milk.
Tooth-Colored Dental Fillings
The modern cavity filling material is called “composite resin.” It’s a mixture of glass or quartz and a special plastic material called “resin.” Composite resin fillings are color-matched to the shade of your natural teeth, making them blend well.
Replacing Teeth With Dentures and Partials
Dentures are a full set of replacement teeth that have several benefits:
- Dentures support your facial muscles and help decrease bone loss in your jaw.
- Dentures give you back your smile.
- You don’t have to live on soft foods.
- They improve your self-esteem.
- Missing teeth affect your speech—dentures restore your ability to speak properly.
Dentures won’t feel exactly like your natural teeth, but they do let you eat and speak normally and prevent you from being embarrassed about a toothless smile.
A partial denture, also called a “partial,” is used to replace all the teeth on one arch of your mouth. If you’ve had just your upper or lower teeth removed, you would receive a partial denture.
Handling Sleep Apnea
Sleep apnea makes it hard to get a good night’s rest, making you wake up tired and feeling fatigued all day. If not corrected, sleep apnea can lead to serious health issues such as:
- Hypertension
- Heart disease
- Stroke
- Diabetes
The commonly prescribed solution is a CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machine, but many people find the CPAP machine to be uncomfortable and as much a barrier to a good night’s rest as the sleep apnea.
We have an alternative solution to sleep apnea. At Broadway Cosmetic Dentistry PC, we can fit you with a custom-made oral appliance that will keep your breathing passages open during sleep, alleviating your sleep apnea. If your CPAP machine is keeping you from getting the rest you need, call us for an appointment at (914) 631-5222
Treating Gum Disease
Do your gums bleed after you brush or floss? This is a sign you may have gum disease. Gum disease is an infection caused by a buildup of the bacteria which develops on your teeth. Once the bacteria grows and spreads below your gum line, it can cause redness, soreness and even swelling of your gums. The way to prevent gum disease is to brush and floss regularly and to come in for your semi-annual checkups.
Gum disease is easily treatable if caught early. If left untreated for a long time, it can lead to loss of teeth and some serious health issues. The treatment consists of removing the infection from below your gum line. The procedure, called “deep cleaning,” is similar to when your hygienist cleans the hard deposits from your teeth during a normal cleaning, but deep cleaning is done below the gum line.
Some of the warning signs of gum disease are:
- Tender, red and swollen gums
- Bad breath that won’t go away
- Bleeding gums from brushing or flossing
- Loose or shifting teeth
- Receding gum line
Simple Tooth Extractions and Wisdom Teeth Extractions
Whenever possible, we want to save a tooth rather than pull it. But sometimes a tooth can’t be saved and pulling it is the only option. For your normal teeth, including your molars, extraction usually becomes necessary when the tooth has been so damaged that repair by other procedures like fillings, crowns or root canals won’t work.
The other situation requiring extraction is when a tooth is crowding other teeth. This can happen with wisdom teeth. It’s not uncommon for wisdom teeth to crowd your molars. If this happens, and you’re experiencing pain, or your molars are being pushed out of alignment, extraction of the wisdom teeth will correct the problem.
